NSATA History

FORMER NSATA PRESIDENTS:
Steve Monaco (1982 - 1984)
Craig Holz (1984 - 1986)
Jerry Weber (1986 - 1988)
Denise Fandel (1988-1990)
Jerrel Welker (1990 - 1994)
Steven C. Brace, MS, ATC (1994-1996)
Doug Long (1996-1998)
Steve Ronspies (1998 - 2002)
Jim Johnston (2002 - 2006)
Jason Jenkins (2006 - 2006)
Rob Marshall (2006 - Present)

Steve Monaco (1980-1984)
Major Accomplishments: Passing legislation; Public relations with other health field professionals; Seeing the ATC influence on State Senators Major Frustrations: Lack of understanding of the importance of ATC?s at the High School level and convincing athletic directors to hire ATCs; Developing the original drafting of the licensing bill and appeasing the opposition to this concept and process

Future Challenges: Sports Medicine needs to be continually redefined and not locked into a particular career path to ensure the employability of the ATC in an expanding job market. ATCs must continue to expand job skills to find jobs that are suitable, lifestyle conducive, and family friendly.

Craig Holz (1984 - 1986)
Major Accomplishments: Initially it took time to develop our constitution, bylaws, and all the planning to determine the direction we wanted to go. I was either VP or president when we achieved the licensure law. Major Frustrations: All the legislative battles were our biggest frustration and the wheels of progress seemed very slow. Some of the early battles with PT's that eventually became allies were frustrating.

Future Challenges: I guess right now I'm a little concerned about the direction we are going with education and curriculum programs. I am concerned that the push for all the curriculum programs will affect their quality and what about the small schools who will never be able to have programs? I thought we got pretty good training and experience in the internship programs.

Jerry Weber (1986-1988)

Denise Fandel - 1988-1989
Major Accomplishments: There were no really big issues at the time other than the NSSA championship coverage.

Major Frustrations: Apathy is always a concern. Apathy to professional standards and calling each or non licensed individuals on the carpet. Future Challenges: I really am focused more on the national issues related to credentialing than the local issues. I am working on an educational program with the Cornhusker State Games

Jerel Welker (1990-1994)

Steven C. Brace, MS, ATC - 1994-96
Major Accomplishments: Initial attempt to change scope of practice, organization of offices (awards & nominations, etc.), Forcing those who were not licensed to become licensed within the state.

Major Frustrations: As always, apathy amongst membership Future Challenges: Education of public for the need of ATC's at the high school level. A law mandating it would solve a lot of problems!

Doug Long - 1996-1998
Major Accomplishments: Beginning the conversations with the NEAPTA about our practice act changes. Major Frustrations: Lobbying physicians and state senators without my knowing anything about what was going on until it was too late to be part of the process without looking like a slack-jawed fool!

Future Challenges: I think our major challenges are in the area of 3rd party reimbursement. Maybe we could round up a hand full of the past presidents and the old, big names and do a major lobby effort with blue cross/blue shield, Mutual of Omaha, Mid-lands Choice, etc.

Steve Ronspies - 1998 - 2002
Major Accomplishments: Revision of the statutes related to the practice act; Redevelopment of the web site; Improved relationship with the NSAA.

Major Frustrations: Lack of involvement from the majority of the members; Difficulty putting together a regular summer meeting schedule Future Challenges: Keeping everyone aware of the educational reforms and how they are going to impact our profession; Continued public awareness of the athletic trainer and our role in caring for the physically active; Increasing involvement for more members of our association.
